Can the salt spray testing machine conduct the cyclic corrosion test (CCT)?If your purpose is merely to meet basic production compliance requirements or conduct simple metal coating quality inspections, the standard salt spray testing machine is the most cost-effective option available. However, if you are involved in automotive, aerospace or high-performance coating research and development and need to simulate the corrosive environment of alternating dry and wet conditions found in the real world, then a cyclic corrosion test chamber (CCT) is your ideal choice.

2. How to calibrate the salt spray deposition rate?1. Tools for preparation:
Use a standard funnel with a diameter of 100mm (with a collection area of approximately 80cm²) and connect it to a graduated cylinder.
2. Placement:
Place at least two collectors in the box: one close to the nozzle and one far from the nozzle. Ensure there is no sample obstruction above and no condensate dripping from the top cover is collected.
3. Test duration:
Conduct continuous spray tests for at least 16 hours (minimum of no less than 8 hours) to obtain accurate average values.
4. Criteria for judgment:
The volume of salt solution collected per hour should be between 1.0 and 2.0 ml / 80cm² / h.
5. How to adjust:
If the sedimentation rate is too low: Lower the top of the spray tower (diffusion cone) or slightly increase the intake pressure.
If the sedimentation rate is too high: Raise the top of the spray tower (diffusion cone) or slightly decrease the intake pressure. -
3. What are the differences between the salt used for testing and industrial salt?1. Purity requirement: The standard salt spray test (such as ASTM B117) stipulates that the purity of sodium chloride (NaCl) must be ≥ 99.5%.
2. Issues with table salt: Contains iodine (which interferes with the chemical reaction and affects the test accuracy) and anti-caking agents (which can clog the nozzle).
3. Problems with common industrial salt: Contains heavy metal impurities (such as copper and nickel), which accelerate corrosion and cause the test results to deviate from the standard.
Conclusion: Chemical purity (AR grade) or higher-purity dedicated test salt must be used to ensure the authenticity and validity of the test data and to protect the nozzle of the equipment. -
4. What is the difference between NSS and AASS salt spray tests?NSS (Neutral Salt Spray Test) uses a neutral 5% NaCl solution at pH 6.5–7.2 and is the most commonly used method for evaluating general corrosion resistance of metallic coatings and surface treatments.
AASS (Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test) uses a 5% NaCl solution acidified with acetic acid to pH 3.0–3.2, operating at a higher temperature of 50℃. It is more aggressive and is typically used to test decorative chromium plating, anodized aluminum, and other coatings that require stricter corrosion resistance evaluation. -
5. How often should the salt solution in the tank be replaced?It is recommended to replace the salt solution after each test cycle or at least every 7 days of continuous operation. Over time, the concentration of NaCl may change due to evaporation and contamination, which can affect the accuracy of the pH value and spray deposition rate. Always prepare fresh solution using analytical-grade NaCl and distilled or deionized water, and verify the pH and concentration before starting a new test.

6. How should the salt spray test chamber be cleaned and maintained?After each test: Drain the salt solution, rinse the interior walls, nozzle, and collection cups with clean water. Avoid using metallic or abrasive tools that may scratch the PVC/PP surfaces.
Weekly maintenance: Clean the glass nozzle carefully to prevent salt crystal buildup. Inspect the water level sensor and temperature probes for accuracy.
Monthly maintenance: Check the sealing gaskets around the lid for wear or deformation. Inspect the heating element and saturation barrel for scale deposits and clean if necessary.
Regular maintenance ensures consistent test results and extends the service life of the equipment.
