There were 5 fire incidents involved! Tesla is recalling over a thousand units of the Powerwall 2 energy storage devices.

Recently, Tesla issued a recall notice, initiating a free replacement program for approximately 10,500 all-in-one Powerwall 2 AC energy storage devices within the United States. According to data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Tesla has received 22 reports of overheating of this device, including 6 cases of smoke and 5 cases of fire. Fortunately, all were minor property losses with no injuries. 


Tesla stated that the issue originated from defects in battery cells supplied by a third party, which could lead to overheating, smoking, and even open flames of the equipment. However, the company did not disclose the specific supplier. This recall only involves specific batches of Powerwall 2, and Powerwall 3 is not affected.

At present, almost all affected devices within the United States have been safely discharged remotely. The remaining devices will be handled on-site by technicians. Users can check through the APP whether their devices are within the recall range. Replacement work will be arranged by Tesla or its certified installers via email or phone. 


This is not the first time that the Powerwall 2 has been recalled due to battery issues. As early as September 2015, Tesla initiated a nationwide recall in Australia due to potential hazards with third-party lithium-ion cells. At that time, there were also incidents of smoking and fires. 


It is worth noting that the safety of energy storage systems has become a focus of industry attention. As battery products are moving towards large-scale application, safety testing equipment like external fire test machine is playing a crucial role. It can simulate the performance of batteries under extreme high temperatures or the influence of external fire sources in laboratory conditions, detect the risk of thermal runaway in advance, and provide important data support for manufacturers to improve designs and prevent fire accidents. 


Tesla's energy business has become the company's largest growth engine. In the third quarter of 2025, the business contributed nearly a quarter of the total profit with a revenue share of 13%, and its profit margin was as high as 31.4%, nearly twice that of the non-energy business (16.1%). As of the end of October, Tesla's energy storage deployment capacity increased by 84% year-on-year, reaching a cumulative total of 43.5 GWh over the past 12 months.
